And even though my speed has improved (with about 0.5~0.6 mb/s average compared to the old ~0.3), that's not the kind of download you want to force down people's throats if you want to maintain a steady player base. Even on a speedy connection that takes hours, and if you're still on DSL (Like I am), it's over 24 hours of nonstop downloading (Of mostly leaving it to download while I work/sleep/Real Life).

At one point it would have required a ~30something GB Steam Update just to play the game again. The main thing that made me leave Doom 2016 was the massive multiplayer download updates, and how it was shoehorned in with the rest of Doom 2016. (But then again, mapping for Classic Doom is a hassle for people to work with too, so. Even if it a bit of a hassle for people to work with. It's unfortunate that Snapmap won't make it into the new game, but if it gets released as a standalone-ish thing (Or as something like "Doom Eternal Assets Snapmap DLC for Doom 2016") that would be nice if Id/Bethesda continutes to support the community-made content. This is pure speculation on my part of course, so i might be completely wrong about that

Sadly, we still don't have mod support for the new game, but SP dlc was expected for D16 and unfortunately id had it's expectations on snapmap and with the multiplayer dlc, so now that id has decided to deliver sp content themselves, well it's a good thingĪlso as i understand, snapmap was a John Carmack idea and one of the last projects that he ever worked on at id, maybe now that he's not around to push for it, it was decided to scrap snapmap.

well a bit boring, since it felt a bit limited, but by the last updates when they started to add hell modules, snapmap begun to shine, but i think that it was a bit 'too little, too late' for it, not to mention that it had optimization issues (loading snapmap on xbox one takes 5 minutes, almost feels like you're waiting for a c64 game to load, only this time there are not kickass tunes to make the wait worth it) and at the end of the day a poor replacement for mod support. I think players are gonna really enjoy it.Well snapmap didn't do as well as id had hoped, early on was. It is something we’re developing internally, which we didn’t do last time. It’s not an extension of what we did last time. “But we’re not really going deep into that. He also briefly talks about a new-fangled PvP component, which is something completely new to the series: The game will also have an invasion mode, where players can play as a baddie and invade other player’s campaigns to take the place of an AI. The multiplayer part will be developed with the same team rather than outsourced to another studio like in DOOM– where it was criticized for being sub-par compared to the campaign. He also talked about the multiplayer aspect of DOOM Eternal as another example of their plans for expansion after the game is released. He went on to talk about how they’re shifting focus based on the previous title. We have spent the last several years making technical decisions that get us back towards being able to do mods. “We had made some technical decisions way back that just pushed us in a different direction than mods. id Software has long promised post-launch content for Doom, but now we have a better idea of what that content will be.

Stratton was clear about DOOM Eternal mods and how they’re not guaranteed to be in the game. I for one was hoping Snapmap would see a return and be better than ever. Doom players are resentful towards the multiplayer update download as it will take up extra hard drive space. According to people with knowledge of the matter, the size constraints are the reason for SnapMap’s absence. However the latest updates did allow map makers to make unique content. It turns out that the SnapMap level editor will not be ported over to Nintendo Switch. For some, no issues as it was a limited tool. But it didn’t really scratch that itch for people. Posted Aug(edited) As some of us may know, Doom Eternal will not have Snapmap support in favour of future Singleplayer DLC. “One of the big criticisms – and even if I could go back and do it again – I think we’d do campaign DLC after launch. WIth the omission of this feature, id is not working on improving their tech to offer mod support again. It could do a lot more than typical editors but wasn’t a full-blown code-required map editor. SnapMap was an editor that allowed modders to customize maps in fairly advanced ways. The SnapMap mode was basically a successor to mods made by the community. “We’re really focusing those resources on doing some of the things that players wanted more from us post-launch.”ĭOOM’s fans were pretty disappointed when the campaign mode didn’t get any DLC post-release. “Right now we don’t plan on bringing SnapMap back into Doom Eternal,” he said. In a Q/A interview, director Marty Stratton explained their reasoning for getting rid of the previous feature.
